KQED in the Mission

Detour and KQED partnered to produce audio walks of some of San Francisco's most rapidly changing neighborhoods, taking a radio journalist's approach to storytelling in the urban landscape.

Roberto Hernandez, the "Mayor of The Mission," guides listeners deep into the Mission with people who intimately love the neighborhood, but in very different ways. Roberto introduces you to all kinds of 'locals': from tech-worker newcomers drawn to the neighborhood's buzz to Latinos who treasure the neighborhood's traditions. Throughout the tour listeners consider the idea of what it means to belong, or not belong in an evolving neighborhood.

The Mission was one of 3 co-productions with KQED. The others are Haight-Ashbury with host Peter Coyote and Chinatown, hosted by local Norman Fong.
